Did you know that there are four types of giving as written in the Bible? You must know all of these. If you understand the differences of each, then you will see how these acts can reward you in life.

The 4 Types of Giving

Here are the four types of giving according to the Bible:

1. Tithes

Tithes often get confused with offerings, but both are very different from each other.

According to the Bible, tithes are 10% of your income (Leviticus 27:30), which can’t count as an offering. Anything you give more than the required tithe counts as an offering.

Remember that God gave the land and all its fruits. It’s our way of recognizing Him as the provider of all things.

But tithes are more than an act of recognition.  It’s also a way of giving thanks for all the blessings that you are receiving. All your income came from God. So, you can think of the tithe as a way of giving back in gratitude for what we received.

Tithing was mentioned in the Bible a couple of times. But the first act of tithing was done by Abraham. He just came from battle and was met by the Priest/King Melchizedek, who attributed his victory to God and blessed him for it. Then Abraham gave him a tenth of everything (Genesis 14:19-20).

Though tithing was commanded in the Old Testament, the New Testament tells us we should not neglect the weightier issues. Yes, it’s good to offer a portion of our income to God, but we should not forget to offer justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:23). These should go hand in hand. We can’t practice one while neglecting the other.

For this type of giving, here are things you can do:

  • Set aside 10% of your monthly income and donate it to your local church or religious organization.
  • Contribute some of your earnings to support charitable causes that align with your faith.

2. The Seed or Offerings

As mentioned, offerings differ from tithes. Unlike tithing, which has a required amount of how much you should give, offerings are more of a free will. It’s up to you how much seed you want to share.

Although the more you give, the more you will receive (Luke 6:38). The more seeds you sow, the more plants you harvest.

So, where should you give your offerings or plant your seed? The Bible says that the source of your spiritual food should receive your offerings (1 Corinthians 9:11).

For this type of giving, here are things you can do:

  • Donate to nonprofits or charities that align with your values and causes you are passionate about.
  • Support crowdfunding campaigns for individuals or projects in need.

3. The First Fruits

The first fruits are usually done once a year or for every new blessing you receive (Deuteronomy 14:22).

For example, the house of God should receive the total amount of your first salary that you get from your new job. An increase in your salary should also be given to your spiritual storehouse.

Any new blessings you receive are a first fruit, so all these should be offered to God (Proverbs 3:9).

Giving your first fruits once a year will show how grateful you are for the blessings you received from Him.

For this type of giving, here are things you can do:

  • Give a percentage of your first salary from a new job to your place of worship or spiritual community.
  • Donating a portion of any financial windfall (such as a bonus, inheritance, or unexpected income) to a charitable organization.

4. Alms-giving

Unlike those three types of giving above, which you should give to God, alms are for humankind. Your compassion and sympathy will lead you to help the less fortunate and those in need.

There are many ways you can give alms. Many soup kitchens help the less fortunate, where you can donate food, clothes, and cash.

Although most people do alms-giving, many do it the wrong way.

In the Bible, it says that you should give alms in secret so you can protect the dignity of those in crisis. Many are helping others but are bragging about it as well.

All of us can help people in need, but only a few can help others with the purest intentions.

For this type of giving, here are things you can do:

  • Volunteering at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter, providing food, clothing, and support to those in need.
  • Making regular donations to organizations that provide aid and assistance to vulnerable populations, such as refugees or victims of natural disasters.

When you practice all these types of giving, you can control your financial life. But remember, you need to have the right intentions and motivations when giving.

Your heart should be pure when doing such selfless acts, and God will bestow more blessings upon you.

To most people, she is a role model of charity, compassion, and selflessness. To the homeless and destitute, she is the beacon that gives hope to their desperate existence.

Dubbed as “The Living Saint,” Mother Teresa has, without a doubt, made a massive impact on many people’s lives. She changed the world and inspired a lot of people in her own way.

Her journey wasn’t easy, though. She was criticized and humiliated, but that didn’t deter her. She continued to devote her life to caring for the sick, poor, and disadvantaged. In the process, she challenged stereotypes, broke boundaries, and taught us the true essence of charity.

Who was Mother Teresa?

Mother Teresa of Calcutta was a missionary nun who was one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th century. She founded the Missionaries of Charity – a religious organization dedicated to helping the poor. Through this, she was able to create programs and initiatives that made her an icon of charity around the world. In the Catholic Church, she is also known as Saint Teresa after she was canonized by Pope Francis in 2016.

The world came to know her as the hunched old lady wearing a white sari with blue borders. And if you didn’t know anything about her, you probably wouldn’t believe that this unassuming woman is a saint and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. But her stature belied her strength and her passion for serving the poorest of the poor.

Even decades after her death, Mother Teresa’s life and works continued to inspire people and will most likely continue to inspire generations more.

Early Life

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia on August 26, 1910, to parents of Albanian descent. Her family wasn’t wealthy but they lived comfortably. Her father was a businessman who traded medicines and other goods and also worked as a construction contractor. He was also involved in politics and died when Mother Teresa was just 8 years old.

During her childhood years, her mother, who was a very pious woman, would often invite the city’s destitute to dine with them. When she asked her mother about the people dining with them, her mother would only say that “some of them are our relations but all of them are our people.” This created a profound impression on Young Agnes and introduced her to the concept of charity. At a young age, she became fascinated with the lives of missionaries in Bengal and their charitable efforts. Then at 12, she decided to commit herself to religious life.

Four years later, she left her home to join the Sisters of Loreto in Rathfarnham, Ireland with the intent of becoming a missionary. After a year in the Loreto Convent, she was sent to Darjeeling in India to begin her novitiate. There she learned Bengali and later became a principal at a charity school near their convent. Though far from luxurious, her life as a school principal was comfortable. But God had a different plan for her.

Heeding the Call

In 1943, the Bengal province experienced one of its worst famines. Close to 3 million people died of starvation, malaria, and other illnesses. Many families became homeless, and a great number of women became widows. And since widows were regarded as second-class citizens in the Bengali culture, many of them ended up begging on the streets of cities like Calcutta.

Inside the walls of the school, Sister Teresa, as she was known at that time, had a pretty comfortable life. But she had always been acutely aware of the poverty surrounding her. She could see the women begging on the streets and the emaciated orphans who often become victims of violence. Then a train ride going to a retreat changed her life forever.

While on the train, Mother Teresa received her second calling or what she referred to as “the call within a call.” She said that on that fateful journey, Christ talked to her and told her to leave everything and help the poorest of the poor. That’s what she did.

 Armed with basic medical training, strong faith, and a great desire to make a difference, Mother Teresa hit the streets of Calcutta. She had only one goal: to help “the unwanted, the unloved and the uncared for.” Out in the streets, she experienced poverty firsthand. She saw the horrors that street dwellers have to face every single day.

With this, she wasted no time turning her passion into action. She established an open-air school and set up a home for the dying. A few years later, people started recognizing her efforts and many joined in her cause. This led her to found a new religious congregation called the Missionaries of Charity.

Her new congregation started with only a handful of members. Most of them were former teachers or students of the charity school where she taught. When word of her efforts started to spread, donations started to pour in from all over India. And before she knew it, news of her charity work slowly started to spread all over the world. It also brought people’s attention to the pitiful plight of the street dwellers in Calcutta and in all of India.

As her congregation grew, so did Mother Teresa’s fame. By the 1960’s they had opened orphanages, hospices, and lepers houses throughout India. Then in 1965, they opened their first charitable house in Venezuela. This was followed by the establishment of more charity houses in other parts of the world. In 1971, Mother Teresa opened a house of charity in New York – the first one in the US.

But her brand of charity knows no religion. In 1987, she secretly traveled to Beirut, Lebanon, where at that time, Christian and Muslim populations were deeply segregated. She crossed the borders separating them and helped children from both faiths.

She also opened her charity houses to unwed mothers and even established a special home to care for those infected with HIV/AIDS.

Her efforts in fighting poverty around the world have won her numerous awards and peace prizes. She received the Jewel of India award and the Soviet Union’s Gold Medal of the Soviet Peace Committee. Pope Paul VI also bestowed the Decree of Praise for the Missionaries of Charity. And in 1979, she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in bringing help to suffering humanity.

Death and Canonization

Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997, at the age of 87 after years of deteriorating health. At the time of her death, the Missionaries of Charity already had about 4,000 members.

In 2003, she was beatified and declared “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta” by Pope John Paul II. Then in a canonization ceremony in Vatican City last 2016, Pope Francis declared her a saint of the Roman Catholic Church.

She Showed Us The True Meaning of Charity

Many of us dreamed of changing the world, but only very few chose to act on it. And fewer still did it as bravely as this humble woman from Calcutta.

Her genuine desire to serve the poor is what propelled her to pursue this path. If you look at all her humanitarian efforts, her motivations are clear as day. She set up soup kitchens, a leper colony, orphanages, and a home for the dying destitute.

She treated the lepers, educated the poorest of the poor, and fed the homeless. She treated them like her family. All the criticisms and sly comments against her did nothing to extinguish the passion in her heart.

This selfless dedication flamed the fans of charitable awareness around the world. Many were inspired and joined Mother Teresa in her mission.

She could have chosen to ignore her calling, but she didn’t. Her decision to exchange a life of comfort with that of poverty earned her the world’s admiration. This act of hers showed the world that material things won’t bring happiness as much as helping others.

Universal Love

Aside from her passion for serving the poor, Mother Teresa changed the world and also inspired us by showing what universal love means.

She didn’t care if someone was white, black, brown, yellow, young, old, male, or female. In the summer of 1982, she even went to Beirut to help both Christian and Muslim children.

At a time when people with HIV/AIDS were looked down on, her universal love lifted them up. She set up Gift of Love, a home that cares for those infected with the disease.

She was even quoted saying:

“When you judge someone, you have no time to love them.”

Universal love became one of the core principles of The Missionaries of Charity which has now more than 5,000 members in various countries across the globe.

Promoting Peace and Forgiveness

Another way in which Mother Teresa changed the world was by promoting peace and forgiveness. She believed peace began with a smile and lived by this philosophy daily. She worked tirelessly to bridge gaps in a world filled with conflicts and divisions. She promoted harmony among different communities.

Mother Teresa’s efforts were particularly evident during times of crisis and conflict. For instance, during the 1992-1993 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, she visited the country and contacted both sides. She offered support and compassion to everyone affected by the violence. Her presence and words brought hope and healing to many.

Through her actions, Mother Teresa taught us the power of forgiveness. She believed forgiving others brings inner peace and helps build a compassionate, united society. Though often used interchangeably, “grace” and “mercy” differ in many ways.

In a nutshell, grace and mercy are two sides of the same coin. Grace is a gift we don’t deserve, while mercy is not getting the punishment we deserve.

Sounds confusing? Let’s break it down bit by bit.

In the dictionary, grace is defined as courteous goodwill. Meaning, it’s not asked for nor deserved, but is freely given. Mercy, on the other hand, is the compassion and kindness shown to someone whom it is in one’s power to punish or harm. It is an act meant to relieve someone of their suffering.

Let’s put it this way: suppose someone attempted to rob your house. You learned that the robber was just in a desperate situation and didn’t intend to do any harm at all. Instead of calling the police, you chose to pardon the thief and let the matter go – that’s mercy. Then you gave him some food and a few dollars to get him through this trying time – that’s grace.

In a world where mistakes are swiftly punished, and goodwill is only for the worthy, grace and mercy are an absolute necessity.

Grace vs. Mercy in the Scriptures

To give you a better idea of the difference between mercy and grace, let’s compare them from a Biblical perspective.

Grace in the Bible

In the Bible, grace refers to the free and unmerited favor of God towards humanity. It is a central theme in both the Old and New Testaments.

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word often translated as “grace” is “חֵן” (chen), which can also mean “favor” or “charm”. It is used to describe instances where God shows favor to His people despite their flaws and shortcomings.

One example of this was when God gave Moses the Ten Commandments:

Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. “Lord,” he said, “if I have found favor in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance.”

Then the Lord said: “I am making a covenant with you. Before all your people, I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you. (Exodus 34:8-10)

While in the New Testament, the Greek word for “grace” is “χάρις” (charis). The concept of grace is prominently revealed through the person and work of Jesus Christ. We believe that through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, God’s grace is made accessible to all who believe in Him.

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. (Titus 2:11)

This is why in Christian theology, grace is often classified into two types: common and saving grace. The former is universal. It’s God’s grace to all of humanity regardless of their faith in Him. Examples of common grace are the beauty of creation, the life we enjoy, and the resources we are provided. (For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. – Ephesians 2:8-9)

A saving grace, meanwhile, is that which provides salvation to a person. This type of grace is manifested in Jesus Christ himself, whom He sent to save us all. (All are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. – Romans 3:24)

Mercy in the Bible

Mercy is often described in the Bible as God’s compassionate and forgiving nature and a virtue that humans are called to embody. It is closely related to forgiveness, compassion, and showing kindness to others.

There are four key aspects of mercy referred to in the Bible:

  1. God’s Mercy

The scriptures emphasize God’s limitless mercy and compassion towards humanity. This is demonstrated through His forgiveness, grace, and willingness to withhold punishment that humans deserve for their sins.

But God, being rich in mercy because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2:4-5)

  1. Human Mercy

Grace and mercy are undoubtedly God’s ultimate expression of love for us. But how should we respond to this undeserved kindness? The Bible teaches us of three ways: recognize, accept, and grow.

Recognize

To be able to respond to his grace and mercy fully, we must first recognize our need for such. We must humbly accept that we are all sinners and imperfect, and everything we have is thanks to Him. Let us shed our pride and shift our focus away from ourselves. Only by doing so can we acknowledge His presence in our lives and all the blessings we’ve received from Him.

Accept

He has given His grace and mercy for free, never asking for anything in return. Thus, it’s only right to accept these acts of love with all our hearts. Wholehearted acceptance is the best way of showing our gratefulness for everything we’ve received.

Grow

When we accept his grace, we begin to grow in his love. In time, these seeds of love that He has planted in our hearts will take root and bear fruits. Through acts of kindness and compassion, we can spread to the world the grace and mercy that He generously gifted us.

The digital lifestyle has affected almost every aspect of our life. And that includes parenting.

Gone are the days when children were disciplined for any wrongdoings. Instead, the parenting focus in the past few years has shifted to child-centered rearing methods. As a result, children nowadays are often let off the hook and are rarely held accountable for their actions.

A Washington Post article blames this shift on overworked parents who are too tired to teach moral values to their kids personally. Instead, children learn about right and wrong from TV shows and online videos. And more often than not, those videos are inappropriate for their age. Nor do they teach a moral lesson.

This underlines that now, more than ever, our children need guidance. There’s just too much distraction around them that can lead them astray. Remember that kids are like sponges. They absorb everything they see or hear. And it falls on us, adults, to steer them to the right path.

It is our responsibility to provide moral education to our children as early as possible. They look up to us as role models. If we want them to grow up to be productive members of society, we must teach them how.

Remember, they absorb everything like a sponge. When they do something wrong, and no one bothers to correct them, they’ll start to think that it’s perfectly fine to do it again. Until those small mistakes snowball into grand schemes that can send them to prison.

In the strictest sense of the word, there are no best cities to be homeless. Having no permanent housing is hard no matter where you are in the world. And no person should ever be able to experience it.

But if we are to compare the state of homelessness among cities in the US, the difference can be striking. On one side, you’ll see cities that are trying really hard to address their homelessness problem. On the other, some cities are doing their best to ignore it. The former usually have legislations and various programs in place to address the problem. While the latter tend to have restrictive policies against the homeless.

In this post, we’ll feature the cities that are winning the fight against homelessness. We looked at not just the numbers but the overall picture: the how, whether what they’re doing is sustainable, and the homeless people’s quality of life.

Here are the best cities for homeless people in the US:

1. Houston, Texas

In less than 10 years, Houston has successfully reduced its homeless population by 55%. This success is largely due to its Housing First Policy that aims to quickly move homeless people from shelters to permanent housing. As we can see from the numbers, the strategy seems to be working. In fact, it’s hailed as one of the best practices for ending homelessness.

What makes the program so successful is that it addresses the problem at the roots. Everything else seems to follow when someone has a permanent place of their own. 2. Austin, Texas

Following in Houston’s footsteps, Austin also made a considerable dent in its homeless population.

In 2018, the City Council made ending homelessness their top priority. The action led to more resources being allocated to address homelessness as a whole. This includes meeting their immediate needs, housing programs, and preventing more people from becoming homeless.

The city has also put in place an ordinance that allows camping in public places. They hope that the increased visibility of homeless people would also raise awareness about their plight.

3. Salt Lake City, Utah

In 2015, Salt Lake City officials announced that they have virtually eliminated homelessness in the city. Of course, that’s quite a stretch especially now that the city is again experiencing a spike in homelessness. But it cannot be denied that the city has done something right when it comes to ending homelessness.

Ten years ago, the city started a homeless initiative that prioritizes housing for the homeless. Instead of the typical run-of-the-mill housing in a shady part of town, they built spaces that homeless people would actually want to live in. They’re standard quality, aesthetically pleasing, and most importantly affordable for people on housing programs.

4. Berkeley, California

Four years ago, Berkeley was in the throes of a homeless crisis. A survey in January 2017 concluded that about 1% of the city’s population is homeless. Though the numbers haven’t improved drastically over the past few years, living in the city has some advantages when you’re homeless.

For one, the city has mild weather for most of the year. This makes it more conducive to living outdoors. Berkeley is also home to a number of non-profit organizations that serve the homeless.

Recently, the city has also implemented the Coordinated Entry System (CES). It’s a program that aims to:

  • streamline the homeless assessment process and services
  • prioritize disabled and chronically homeless people
  • create a central coordination system for referrals

Part of the program is a hotline that homeless people can call for emergency shelter, transitional housing, and other homeless services.

5. San Diego, California

Like Berkeley, San Diego has a moderate climate suitable for living outdoors. Though the city still has one of the largest homeless population in the country, it’s actively taking steps to curb the problem.

Aside from providing homeless services, the city also built tents and temporary shelters. It also has various non-profit organizations that provide food, shelter, and other necessary services to the homeless.

The city’s housing first policy has also moved thousands of homeless people from temporary shelters to permanent housing.

6. New Orleans, Louisiana

After hurricane Katrina, the number of homeless people in New Orleans has skyrocketed. In 2007, the city has about 12,000 homeless people or about 10,000 more from before Katrina. But in 2018, the city has managed to bring it down to less than 1,200.

Like most cities in this list, New Orlean’s success is largely due to its housing first policy. The city used federal funds to create permanent housing for homeless people without requiring them to get over their addiction. They have also put up a hundred low-barrier shelters where people can stay without having to sober up.

Though homelessness remains a major issue in the country, the progress made by these cities gives us hope. And we can only wish that other cities can learn a thing or two from them.
